Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy audio-essay program gives high school students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves on a patriotic theme and compete for scholarships at the national level. Post 9180 sponsors Kaufman County students whose entries advance to district, department, and national competition.
Eligibility: Grades 9-12, public, private, parochial, or home study. Deadline: October 31 annually. Learn more at VFW.org
Each year, more than 800,000 middle school students nationwide enter the Patriots Pen youth essay contest. Students in grades 6-8 write a 300-400 word essay on a patriotic theme for a chance to win a share of more than 3 million dollars in scholarships. Post 9180 actively sponsors Kaufman County youth in this program.

The Buddy Poppy is the VFW official memorial flower, representing the blood shed by American service members. Since 1922, poppies have been distributed to honor the fallen and raise funds for veterans in need. Post 9180 distributes Buddy Poppies across Kaufman County around Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Post 9180 participates in VFW scholarship programs awarding millions annually to students and student veterans. Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen winners from Kaufman County advance through post, district, department, and national levels with increasing awards. The VFW Smart Maher National Citizenship Education Teacher Award recognizes exceptional K-12 teachers for outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism. Post 9180 accepts nominations for outstanding educators across Kaufman County. Awards are given at post, district, department, and national levels. Nominations may be submitted by students, parents, administrators, or community members. Eligibility: All certified teachers grades K-12. Learn more at VFW.org
Each year, Post 9180 honors the first responders who protect and serve Kaufman County. The VFW Public Servant Award recognizes outstanding EMTs, law enforcement officers, firefighters, 911 dispatchers, and EOD personnel serving our community. Kaufman County Veterans Service Officer Robert Hunter provides free, confidential assistance to veterans and military families accessing earned VA benefits, including disability claims, healthcare enrollment, GI Bill education benefits, and survivor assistance.
